A Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamic Approach for Analysis of Power Conversion Efficiency in the Wind Energy System

This article proposes an approach and develops appropriate method of applying linear non-equilibrium thermodynamics to analyze energy processes, in particular using the example wind conversion system (WECS) with a directly connected vertical axis turbine (VAWT) vector-controlled permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG). The main steps proposed are description component subsystems as universal or linearized converters (ECs), which characterized by several dimensionless parameters, one is degree coupling between their input output. According value, well justified efficiency criteria, optimal operating points each ECs can be easily found. Such makes it possible abstract from physical laws different nature equally assess work subsystems. next step connection received ECs. As shown paper, for most common cascade ECs, there best conditions connection, under newly formed equivalent EC have maximum efficiency. opens up opportunity influence already real parameters cascaded interconnected on quality justify specific solutions that would not been seen without this approach. For example, study, all PMSG, only selection rated inductance armature winding made improve PMSG VAWT approximate entire WECS possible, especially medium high winds.
